The story of Wollongong Comedy began in 2006 when comedy organiser and promoter Martin Henchion moved to Wollongong from his native Ireland. The Builders Club in Wollongong was the first venue open to putting on a comedy show, and on the 24th August 2006 the Craichouse Comedy Club was born in the Piano Bar at the club. A bunch of local and Sydney comedians took to the stage and brought the house down. Star performers that night, MC Martin Henchion and Stu Macpherson would join forces the next year, with fellow comedian Shaun Flagg and marketing gun Alice Henchion to create the Wollongong International Comedy Festival.
Later in 2008 Martin and Alice returned to Ireland for a stint. Stu and partner Shane Moon took the helm and on Martin and Alice’s return the four decided to join forces as a partnership and the brand Wollongong Comedy was born.
In 2012 Stu and Shane took over the ownership of Wollongong Comedy.
In 2015 a golden new chapter of the Wollongong Comedy story was opened with the founding of an open mic night at Jane’s Bar in Wollongong. New comedians came out of the woodwork and a thriving comedy scene resulted in more open mic rooms opening. For Wollongong based aspiring comedians there was enough stage time to hone their craft without the need to travel to Sydney.
In 2022 Martin and Stu rejoined forces and are now the Wollongong Comedy team. Running comedy, trivia and themed trivia events Wollongong Comedy continues to grow and be the shining light in the Illawarra’s live comedy scene.
Stu Macpherson is a comedian, MC, comedy promoter, public servant and half time dad (gives his kids an orange and sends them back outside to play some more). Stu has produced and performed in shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival and the Wollongong International Comedy Festival. He’s also had a hand in running The Craichouse Comedy Club, Wollongong Comedy and was the driving force behind the iconic comedy room at Jane’s Bar in Wollongong, a room that formed and solidified the local comedy scene in Wollongong.
Martin Henchion is a comedian, MC, trivia writer and host, radio presenter and full time Dad. An Irish native, Martin moved to the Wollongong in 2006 and now calls the Illawarra home.
